Ecotourism in the Cordillera Central: Jarabacoa and its waterfalls
Published: 06 Oct 2026 · Destination: Jarabacoa

Cool weather, mountain rivers and waterfalls: how to enjoy Jarabacoa, the tourism capital of the Cordillera Central.
Jarabacoa surprises anyone expecting a Caribbean of beaches only. Located in the Cordillera Central, it is known as the capital of Dominican ecotourism for its mild climate and mountain scenery.
The Yaque del Norte and Jimenoa rivers form several bathing spots and waterfalls. Salto de Jimenoa and Salto Baiguate are the two most visited falls.
Options range from hiking and horseback riding to canyoning in the rainy season. There are also cafés and farms where you can learn about local production.
The best time to visit the area is from November to April. In the rainy season, high water can limit some routes; check trail conditions with a local guide.
