Every winter humpback whales arrive in the Bahía de Samaná. We tell you when to go and where to watch them.
Between January and March, the Bahía de Samaná becomes one of the best places in the world to watch humpback whales. The cetaceans arrive from the North Atlantic to breed and raise their calves in warm waters.
The usual departure point is the port of Samaná (Santa Bárbara de Samaná). Boat excursions last about two or three hours and mostly depart in the morning.
Tips: book ahead in high season, bring light clothing and sun protection, and respect the rules for vessels so as not to stress the animals.
Whale season coincides with the high tourism season, so it is also a good moment to combine the outing with the rest of the beaches and natural parks of the peninsula.
