Arriving at your destination: first steps in the Dominican Republic

Currency exchange, transfers, your hotel details and what to do right after landing: the practical guide to a smooth arrival in the Dominican Republic.

Landing in the Dominican Republic is easy, but your first steps set the tone for the whole trip. This guide covers the most common things right after the flight: currency, transfers, cards and hotel check-in.

Exchange only what you need. The official currency is the Dominican peso (DOP). At the airport you can change dollars early, although the rate is usually better at banks and official agencies in the cities. Carrying some cash plus a backup card for the first days is the most practical plan.

Book your transfer before flying. Airport taxis work and are safe, but travelling with a private transfer or your hotel's service is more comfortable when your resort is far away, as with the large Punta Cana or Bávaro complexes.

Keep your accommodation details handy. Have the address, the reception phone number and a map app with the area downloaded. That way you avoid being fully dependent on mobile signal when you leave the airport.

First meal and check-in. Most resorts let you drop off your luggage and use the facilities even if check-in is later. On that first morning you can relax by the pool while the staff gets your room ready.

Plan on the same day you arrive. Ask which excursions or bays your hotel recommends and book the most popular ones early; in high season they fill up fast. Start light and leave room to rest: by the next day your body will already be on Caribbean time.
