Frequently asked questions
We answer the most common questions about traveling to the Dominican Republic.
Do I need a visa to travel to the Dominican Republic from Spain?
Spanish citizens do not need a visa for tourist stays of up to 30 days. On arrival you pay a tourist fee, which is normally included in the ticket. If you travel on another nationality, check the conditions with the embassy or consulate.
What is the best time to visit the Dominican Republic?
High season runs from December to April, with dry weather and pleasant temperatures. From May to November there is more rain and lower prices, although showers are usually short. For whale watching in Samaná, choose January to March.
What currency is used, and is it better to bring dollars or Dominican pesos?
The official currency is the Dominican peso (DOP). US dollars are accepted in many tourist areas, but it is best to exchange money at banks or official exchange rates. Cards are used normally in hotels, restaurants and excursions; carry some cash for small shops.
Is it safe to travel to the Dominican Republic?
In tourist areas the hotel presence is high and organized transfers are safe. As in any destination, use common sense: avoid poorly lit areas at night, don't display valuables and book transfers with trusted providers.
What language is spoken in the hotels?
The official language is Spanish, although at resorts the staff usually speak English and in some areas French or German. This site is shown in Spanish and English.
How many days are recommended for a beach trip?
For a beach stay in Punta Cana or Bávaro, 5 to 7 nights are recommended. If you also want to see destinations such as Samaná, La Romana or Santo Domingo, add 2 or 3 more days so you don't lose time on transfers.
What is the best way to get around between destinations?
For long distances it is usual to fly or travel by tourist bus. In the east (Punta Cana, La Romana, Bayahibe), renting a car or private transfers is the most comfortable option. The Cordillera Central destinations are best explored by car or on a guided excursion.
Are all-inclusive resorts always the best option?
All-inclusive is a good fit if you want comfort and a predictable budget. If you prefer to eat out and get to know the local cuisine, a hotel with breakfast or self-catering accommodation may be more interesting. Compare options by area, star rating and budget.
