Hoyo de Pelempito
Category: Mirador · Destination: Pedernales

Hoyo de Pelempito is a geological depression about 700 metres deep, formed by tectonic movements and set within Sierra de Bahoruco National Park in Pedernales. It is reached along the Aceitillar road: almost 32 km from sea level up to the lookout, at over 1,300 metres, on a route that shifts from desert vegetation to pine forest and cloud forest. From the observatory, with interpretive trails, you take in panoramic views of the park and of a dry forest unique in the Caribbean, home to endemic species. The climate is cool and can drop below 0 °C at dawn. It is best to go in a 4x4, with warm clothing, water, sunscreen and hiking shoes, and to visit in the dry season.
