Calle Las Damas

Calle Las Damas is the oldest cobbled street in the Americas and the historic axis of Santo Domingo's Colonial Zone. It was laid out in 1502 under governor Nicolás de Ovando and takes its name from the court ladies who walked it to mass or for an evening stroll. Along its colonial façades stand the Ozama Fortress, the Casa de Bastidas, the Casa de Francia and the Museum of the Royal Houses, all part of the UNESCO World Heritage site. Today it is a pedestrian street ideal for walking, photographing balconies and ending at Columbus Park or the Plaza de España.
