Valle Nuevo

Valle Nuevo National Park is a cold highland plateau of more than 2,200 metres in the heart of the Cordillera Central, whose peaks and slopes are shared by La Vega (Constanza), San José de Ocoa and San Juan. Important rivers of the country rise here and forests of native pine grow, including the famous dwarf forest. It also protects the Las Neblinas and Ébano Verde reserves, waterfalls and hot springs. In the winter months, frost and below-zero temperatures paint a landscape quite unlike the beach Caribbean, with trails, viewpoints and regulated camping areas. It is reached from San Juan along the mountain roads toward Constanza and Valle Nuevo; a 4x4, warm clothing and, if possible, a local guide are recommended.
