Pico Duarte
Category: Montaña / trekking · Destination: San Juan

Pico Duarte is the highest point in the Caribbean, at 3.087 meters (recent measurements place it near 3.100 m), in the Cordillera Central, between Armando Bermúdez and José del Carmen Ramírez national parks. The classic 3-day route sets out from La Ciénaga de Manabao (Jarabacoa): ascent through pine forests and mountain rivers, camps at La Compartición and sunrise at the summit, where in winter the temperature drops below 0 degrees and the lights of the island can be seen. The climb requires an official guide, prior permission from the Ministry of Environment and mules for the luggage.
